Falabella Pony

by ponyPetz

The Falabella Pony is a miniature horse originating from Argentina. This breed is usually only eight hands (78cm) in height, making it one of the smallest horses in the world. In its proportions it is very similar to a normal horse however it is just smaller in size. They have a very sleek coat and thin frame and are very small and compact. The Falabella usually comes with a black or brown coat however less common you can also find spotted varieties. Falabella foals are extremely small and may stand at only 8 inches tall when they are born. It then takes them two years to grow to their full adult height.

They are intelligent animals and can be easily trained. Due to their size they are often used for children to ride on and therefore are often seen at horse shows. The Falabella is a hardy animal and is often used in a harness to pull a cart, for example. They are also capable of jumping. The intelligent and friendly temperament of the Falabella pony makes them an ideal pet.

The Falabella pony has a dominant dwarfism gene. This means even if you mix this pony with larger breeds the foals are likely to be extremely small. An interesting fact about this breed is they only have seventeen vertebrae, rather than eighteen like usual horse breeds. They are also missing one pair of ribs.

In order to take proper care of a Falabella pony their stables must be cleaned of droppings and swept thoroughly every morning. The bedding must be aired out daily and you should put new bedding in the stable each evening. They love to be fed hay and hard feed every morning and every evening. The amount depends on the actual size of the horse. They should be groomed and have their hooves picked every day too. They should be wormed every 6-8 weeks and you should ensure their hooves are trimmed every 6 weeks.

The Falabella pony often lives to 40-45 years. They are gentle and docile and love the attention of humans. Horse lovers that don’t have a large enough piece of land to keep normal size horses can still have the wonderful experience of owning a horse without the needed space. There is no doubt anyone who owns a Falabella pony enjoys every minute of his or her time with them.
